PostSubject: Running NWN 2 on ATI 6970 or GTX 570 video cards   Wed 11 May - 13:22

I was wondering if there is anyone on our server that has one of these video cards -> AMD/ATI HD 6970 (or the 5870 for that matter), or the GeForce GTX 570 (or even 560 or 580 for that matter).

How well does the game run for you? Are you able to run high resolution with all the effects on? Are you able to get constant high framerate? Comments appreciated. It is a bit difficult to find info on new video cards for such an older game like NWN2.

I have a HD5870.
I run with everything on full exept shadows wich I have on low. My resolution is 1920x1080.
I have two monitors and I often work in the toolset when I play so full shadows will then make it lag in the forrest.
But with shadows on low it works fine.

I have heard the new GeForce's have abit trouble with nwn2 and you may need to run older drivers to get it to work. So I would recomend Radeon.

I played NWN2 with GTX 560 (or was it 570? can't remember) with every option on max and game ran smooth on 1440*900 resolution (monitor just couldn't handle full HD)... I played in single player, though.

However, no lag or no framerate drops in NWN2 is simply impossible. Engine just cannot handle rendering many objects at once. Regardless of how much RAM or HZ you have, you still will be getting noticeable lag when loading huge interior area.

I have a HD 5850 on my latptop and it runs fine at 1920x1080 with all effects besides anti aliasing. If you put that upto say 4 onwards it will chop a bit in areas with lots of placeables and effects.

Regardless of the AA it will get choppy in areas with tonnes of placeables and stuff. A couple of areas on a certain other server would cause this.

At the moment I am running NWN2 on a HIS 6850 , game runs pretty smooth. I have everything set to max at the moment but I am too low level to really be in places where people are using madness spell effects. Will report if I see sudden unexpected drops or not!

I went ahead and purchased a GeForce GTX 570 after reading the comments here and reading some online reviews. It seems to me that NVIDIA is far superior in the game based on a review I found. I can't seem to find the link right now, but it showed the GTX 480 and 570 being much faster than the ATI 6950 and 6970 video cards.

I like nVidia more for many reasons, most of which is the company itself. Good support, fast patches, ease of use, and less problems. Side by side nVidia cards tend to be a bit slower, but much more reliable.

I run it on a 260GTX maxed settings with 1920x1080, and see very little lag except when a lot of toons are in the same area with lots of spells and such.

I think you will be happy with the card.

Yeah...in hindsight should have gone with Nvidia.

Latest updates to catalyst are causing some strange issues depending on camera angle (tested with 3 other users, different ATI cards), causing everything bar the HUD to completely white out, usually in caved areas.

given the game has a nivida screen in the opening loading Very Happy i would assume it has the best support.

im running 2 9800 GTX 1gig sli and with that i can run max setting shadows and 8x anti.
having the ram and processor helps, its got to be a big pipe all the way down, any bottle neck in the loop from gpu to cpu is going be the fps drop.

vile

I have also read many places that NVIDIA is best with NWN 2, i have read a lot (well more than i'd like) about people having odd graphics issues in NWN 2 with ATI cards. With NVIDIA cards i have barely heard of any problems.

I got an ATI Radeon HD 3650 which works great with NWN 2 luckily. Though it has issues with NWN 1 oddly.

....Now it comes as no surprise that I don't even know what you're talking about. Where does it say what my video card is on a laptop?

I've found through experience that NVIDIA cards run very hot and clocked high and they never last as long. Whenever I've had one it starts showing coloured pixels after a year or so, crashing etc

ATI however I've never had problems and I find them exremely reliable and cool. I've even passed older ATI cards to family/friends and they still run perfectly.

My desktop has an ATI card and my laptop I chose specifically to have an ATI card inside it.

Ghar

Reguading nwn1 my setup runs a high frame rate at 180 per sec, but you are totaly right!
sometime my character will jump the full lengh of the map when transion into a new zone, this puts me on the other end of the map even if it has no were to go, like a cliff with no ramp lol.
its so fast it overcalulates the entry point if i hold down the run button say 1% of the time.
it also only suports 1 odd resoultion setting, and the very first two 600x"400? and 800x600, but thos dont support the bells and wistles of the advanced graphic settings. Luckly at least one of them worked, and for each i saw duplicate LOL, very ood.
This is unique to the machine and has never happend on the dual 8100's

Neverwinter nights 2 on the dual 8100's out of the box didnt even work right, and often would render alof of the textures a plaid pink grid, like the skybox and other elements.

Oddly an update fixed compaitblity with it. I was bummed when a guy installed it on his laptop and it was fine, hehe and we got it the same day. However his did run slower.

That update total cleared the problem, but when one of the cards died i upgraded to the 9800 GTX+'s for 1gig per 2 gig sli, vs the 1gig sli of the 8100's 512 mb cards.
At that time i also upgraded to a 1000 wat power supply, and added a higher buffer and rpm secondary ide hard drive on its own ide cable for games to be located, and seprate from the page file of the os' sata drive.

i also readybosted an 8gig usb 2.0 flashdrive and upgraded to 8 gig of sli ram from 4 when i upgraded from vista 64 to win 7 64.

nlyh, my friend sternly suports ATI and in some games his build did outperfrom mine, and in others mine did better. Guildwars was a game where his fps with identical settings outperformed mine with relatively comprable technolgies (he went intel i went amd)

Also yes! Nivida card do run much hotter then ATI cards, my powersupply is on the bottom of the case so i turned it upside down to pull hot air down and out, because on the top of my case if a huge fan that blows up so it mays a Y of air flow, up and out and down and out, also there are two fans in the front, a fan in the backm liquid cooled processor with a fanned eatsink and a fan on the heat sink to that came with the sli delux asus mo-bo

When playing NWN 1 my computer getes very choppy now and then to the point where i almost try ripping out my hair. It is extremely frustrating, and all the hardware inside my computer should make it perfectly capable of running NWN 1, and i haven't found any fixes for the issue either.
