PostSubject: Springtime Rain   Sat May 16, 2015 4:36 pm

As of late, the rain seems to be non-stop. Sometimes it pours, other times it seems to drizzle. However, it's constantly coming down. Puddles look to begin to accumulate more and more of the water from the skies.

The last few days of rain have not been unnoticed by the Captain and he distinctly remembers the great rains of 1379 that battered down on them for months. This time though, now that he is in a position of authority, he could turn this rain or more importantly, the environment, to his advantage. He sends out orders for one in every three militiamen to take up an eight hour shift digging waist deep trenches around the wall and the perimeter of the town. He distinctly orders these men to toss all the loose soil toward the town and mound it up next to the trench. As a final measure, gravel, stone and wooden planks are to be set on level ground behind the mounds of muddy soil.

"The logic behind theses trenches", as he explains to the men."Is that attacking foot troops will have to drop down into these water filled muddy trenches and become bogged in them. Then they must attempt to pull themselves up over the loose dirt and rock."

"In theory, as the trench is waist deep the mounds in front of them should be of equal height to the depth dug. This should give us waist high mounds offering us some ground protection. Further to this we will have the upper ground and will not be bogged in the mud. Polearms will be the defending weapon of choice here."

Lira took her turn digging that afternoon, a thoroughly messy affair. She managed to only fall down in the watery ditch twice, which was probably pretty fortunate for her. Being unexpectedly wiry for her slight build the priestess managed to move a lot of mud...but she also kept an eye our for bugs and insects and any sign of illness amongst the militia laborers. She knew a LOT about healing, and knew that standing water could be an invitation to illness and disease. Best to keep an eye out for anything untowards before it could become established.

Once her shift ended she hastily cleaned up and dashed off towards crafting hall - she had a thought she might find Elektra there. And she had a couple of questions...

After a couple days have gone by, the rain continues to flow freely. The militiaman work towards digging the trenches, and as they did so the rain pooled freely around their boots. Mud started to become an issue for them as they continued and tried their best to complete the task at hand. Like Lira, a few of them actually fell. Seeing that they weren't the only ones to do so made them feel better, even have a bit of a laugh out of it.

As the rain fell, it looked to start to actually begin to fill the trenches already...

Returning from Myth Drannor he takes a parameter walk around the town inspecting the trenches and thanking the men on site for their efforts. He was keenly aware of the men's moral and ordering them to dig in the mud wouldn't improve it. It was time to lead by example, he relieved one of men taking his trenching shovel and giving the lucky solider a new task. He ordered him to find a surveyer and a doctor and bring them to him. Before he began digging he'd cast freedom of movement upon himself then began to pitch in with the rest of the diggers.

Returning to take her next shift of digging, Lira noticed the militia commander and sketched a brief salute as she shouldered a shovel and started squelching her own pile of muck once more. She chatted at the others working as was her norm and made note of the water level and the troop presence and status.

Jonah makes multiple appearances with hot food and drink. He also makes sure to care for any wounds, including the smallest, as these conditions would be rife for infection.

If there are any lulls in his duties above, he picks up a shovel himself, and joins the men in their digging.

Time passes. For the first fifteen minutes he moves carefree through the mud, then his spell fizzles out and the task becomes one now of reflex and strength. He becomes bogged in the mess more than once requiring aid from others to pull him out. As it begins to get dark he wonders were the troop has gotten to. He climbs out of the soup trench, mud sticking to him from head to toe.

The pooling water worried him, they weren't digging into clay and the trenches were filling up too quickly. He never expected that the would dig in clay considering these where prime farm lands and he'd spent months on the construction site on the west bank digging in old river rock dirt. No, the groung flow of water must be saturated. The ground wasn't draining fast enough. His concern grew, the town could be looking at a protential flood. He needed to find a surveyor, get a second professional opinion.

Iwean will discontinue his patrols of Shadowdale and focus on potential damage to the forest from the rains run off, particular attention will be given to the area clear cut by recent constructions.

Posted on 18 May

Iwean checks where the river will overflow into, (ie.. Low lying areas). Looking for any animals or people living in the area. He will also start locating large dead trunks in case there is a need for shoring the banks of the River.

Lucent, who recently is spending even more time than usual inside the House of the Moonmaiden, can be seen outside sweeping the puddles off the little path that leads to the entrance.

Iwean will continue to patrol along the river, taking mental note of areas that may need reinforcement and the location of dead trees that can be used for shoring.

Twitch is seen around the washed out back trails of the woods surrounding Shadowdale, pushing himself along the flash-flooded waters.

"And they called me crazy for buying this at auction."

Unable to find a single surveyor, or anyone with even an ounce of knowledge in the study of geography, he goes in search of the troop he sent on a fools errand. Finding him, he sends him back to his regular duties. Eventually he finds Sister Laura and asks her about the dangers of Sstagnant water. The conversation is short and he requests that she send him a list of diseases with preventive measures and/or cures for them. As a last precaution he advises her to prepare the hospital for the worst.

Low lying areas have now begun to partially flood. The trench that has been worked on is now beginning to flood as well. The farmers are beginning to grow concerned, doing everything they can to prepare should things get worse. Their main worry is about their crops.

I wean will investigated and look for ways to keep the topsoil from running into the river.  If needed he will Polymorph to an Umberhulk and dig raised berms trying to keep the current vegetation on top of the berm. [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]

As many days have passed now and the rain has continued, the River Ashaba now swells, threatening to flood completely in lower lying areas. The farms close to the river are now under threat of being flooded. Farmers have been doing what they can to try to get their crops safe, but the rain continues and hampers their efforts.

Lira Fry, having talked to many of the farmers during the Dust survey, went back to talk to those who lived near the river.  She asks what kind of emergency aid, if any, would be helpful at this juncture. Labor, supplies, tools - which of any of these would help?

Then Lira went to go find the militia Captain. She needed to ask about the partially completed trenches that were at this time more a health hazard for the town than an effective defensive work.

With sixty militia men working eight hours a day for the last fourteen days the trenches are all but finished and looking more like a small muddy moat than trenches. Lira would find Colt on the north wall watching over the efforts of Elektra with the salted fields.

Jonah continues his efforts to keep spirits high, and takes any opportunity to take on the burdens of those nearing exhaustion.

((Based on the content of the thread I thought the project had been halted or abandoned. Since I'm mistaken, I don't have much to say here.))

"Gracious!  I've tried digging in a hole full of water, and I found it well-nigh impossible!  The extra weight and resistance of the water...the almost continual collapse of the walls of the sides of the hole...my stars!  These men should be commended most highly - they could teach dwarven miners a thing or two about digging."

Having sufficiently embarrassed herself Lira wanders back to town.

The sort of mud moats are now looking as if they themselves will flood over soon. Commander Vorik steps in looking rather frustrated and upset. He orders the militia to stop their digging and tries to determine what would be best. He can be heard muttering something about needing to find a druid.

The militia seems thankful for any efforts put forth by healers to aid in their exhaustion, and a few of them go to the hospital to speak further about their ailments.

Glad to be back on familiar ground, Lira would check on the diggers, hand out some liniment and herbal poultice, and examine all concerned to ensure that there were no infections presenting. She also would make sure that any cuts or scrapes were well-cleaned and bound.
