PostSubject: Selling Contraband   Fri Jun 27, 2014 5:46 am

Upon browsing the wares of one of the Shadowdale merchants, Kasia notices a tool of necromancy on sale.

Spoiler:

She'd confront the merchant openly about it, reminding him that the town laws expressively forbid the practice of such dark arts, and ask that he destroy the rod or give it to her that she might see it destroyed.

She stands nearby and awaits his response.

"What about the Necromancer's robe, and the Cause fear scroll that's for sale for like.. years now?"

Spire mutters with sarcasm.

"Merchants buy and sell what the market demands. They are not run by Lawfull Zealots."

And with that, and a jest of dark humour, Spire puts an Inquisitor's hat upon Kaisa's head.

"There is no such thing as innocence, only degrees of guilt.."

Spire wanders off with a smirk on her face.

The Enchantress Shahnaz watches the exchange with interest, after the outburst concludes she approaches both the merchant and Kasia.

"One should be very careful about the restraint of trade", she advises, "Such a thing can be a slippery slope. A merchant surely has the right to offer anything for sale, it is for the buyer to choose what is and what is not appropriate to purchase. This is the way of a free market."

Shahnaz stands by the merchant and continues to stay vigilant, keen to ensure that free trade is not disturbed.

As Spire speaks, Kasia would reply:

"The r..robe is a simple piece of cloth named so because its appearance m..matches the beliefs of the common people of what a necromancer might wear, while the mentioned scroll does nothing to desecrate the bodies of the d..dead or r..r..rouse them from their rest, neither are forbidden for use by the town's laws".

"A merchant," She continues to say "may not be a 'Lawful Z..zealot', but he is no more exempt from the towns laws than any other person who passes through town. Farmer, adventurer, foreign lord or other..otherwise."

When Spire attempts to place a hat on her head, she'd move out of her way, making it clear that she does not find the gesture in any way humorous, and would block further attempts with force if need be.

After the Enchantress speaks her mind, she would add:

"Slippery s..slopes are a poor way of presenting a logical argument, certainly in this situation where the slope can work both ways. A merchant has no right to sell whatever he pleases, or are you suggesting that Sh..Shadowdale should condone slave trade in the name of a free market?"

"The thing on sale has no use short of the d..direct violation of the law. Furthermore, its v..very p..presence in our town is an affront to the all goodly gods, and the patron of the good f..farming men of the dale in particular."

The Enchantress looks at the merchant, and then turns to Kasia.

"I see no law that restricts the trade in such items within the boundaries of the town, only a law that restricts the summoning of such horrendous creations. And I genuinely beg to differ that a merchant is most certainly free to offer any item whose trade has not been deemed illegal. "

"More to the point, I am sure our mutual friend here would be more than happy to abide by any laws of the township as regards free trade, and at present is doing precisely that. Should you receive an edict from the Elders that decrees such, I shall personally assist you to inform all merchants of such restrictions. Until that time, I think you had best be about your own business and leave our fine friend to pursue his entirely legal trade."

She bows her head briefly at the merchant before folding her arms, waiting for Kasia's reaction.

"While your gallant defense of f..freedom at the expense of offending the very gods that place food on your table and the very traditions these people have followed for generations is no d..doubt to be appreciated, the town's laws as set by its last Lord, the missing Lord Mourngrym Amcathra, state plainly that any man 'harbouring or offering aid to a c..criminal, particularly those charged with Capital crimes shall be counted as if they had committed the same crimes by association, and as such will have the same p..punishment levied upon them'."

"A merchant s..selling an item of which no use can come save the violation of the law, is well guilty of knowingly offering aid to a criminal, all f..for the sake of greed."

"As for the s..supposed need to expressively mention trade - by the same logic one could argue that a man hiring an assassin to murder one of the towns authorities has c..committed no crime, nor would a man who d..deals in slaves, one who buys and sells stolen goods, or even a merchant sneaking a banned individual into the town in his caravan for c..coin, yet they are all guilty by association, as decreed by the missing Lord, and the last source of legal authority in the dale."

*Sky is wandering by and hears the commotion, coming over. She smiles to Shahnaz before looking to Kasia*

"Ah, hello human undercover guard. What law are you enforcing this day?"

Milo would approach the merchant to make some purchases, grumbling all the way. Upon hearing the exchange, he grunts out:

I'll buy the damn thing and destroy it. The merchant lines his pockets, and the town is free from such a perverted device. Everyone wins.

The merchant clears their throat and speaks clearly looking between Kasia and Shanaaz. They raise and eyebrow and replace the book where it was kept. "There is a man named Mark Tare. He has been a customer of mine recently. I strongly suggest you both seek him."

A guard clanks up from his rounds as he notices the gathering crowd and booms, "Nothing to see here! Go about your business!"

Keillyn walks up behind the discussing pair. Having seen the White Sage and having paperwork for her. She silently slips her the parchments as she overhears the discussion. Her eyes drifting to the merchant's small book shelf as she looks for any tomes that may end up 'banned' from the result of a lawful inquiry. Her gaze flicks from title to title, owning most of them, but checking each one to see if they are new, or in risk of being turned into a forbidden property.

Upon being ushered along by the guard, the Enchantress Shahnaz would peer down at the parchments handed to her by the Archivist and smile. Bowing her head briefly to the Archivist, Sky, and the merchant in turn she would then head towards the General Store.

When Milo arrived, Kasia would turn to him with a sigh:

"S..seeing profit in s..such deals will only make t..the merchant more inclined t..to procure such items in the future. Violation of t..the law or assistance in such s..should not be rewarded."

She does not, however, make any move to try and stop him from carrying out his offer.

If Milo does purchase the thing, she'd move along when the guard bellows, otherwise she would remain in her place and calmly explain the situation to the guard.

Artaius watches the events unfold and simply shakes his head.
He mutters to himself "There's an undead horde not far north , the forests are plagued by a talonite hex and everywhere else is not that better off.. she worries about the rod?"

He does find it amusing that she kept the inquisitor hat on and moves with a smirk.

"Yes, but this man is merely trying to make a living. I doubt he has any insidious plots to undermine the law or safety of this town. He should not suffer a financial loss because of this, but it would stand within reason for the law to see that this man is more aware of the items he sells. So if the guards allow, I will compensate the man. No one has been harmed, so I believe this to be the fairest and most just course of action."

After her eyes going over the titles on the bookshelf, she finds nothing left of interest and leaves.
