The old man nods, puffing his pipe, seeming to consider their words. “You've every right to be angry. Here you perceive that you bled and gave much to free Shadowdale and here I come, sweeping in, seemingly bringing your triumph down to nothing. It's true. What I did for this town can't easily be measured by blood and sweat, not like what you have done can be. All anyone has is my word that I did, indeed, do something where as what you've done can be plainly seen."

"However, this is my home." He continues "So, naturally I'm worried about what it is that I see you doing now. Each of you goes about on a task, working toward what you feel to be for the best of this town and yet… have any of you once stopped to ask the people what it is they want for their home?”

“I hear talk of spending gold and resources on opening up messenger routes to Myth Drannor, training these farmers to be soldiers, rebuilding homes.” He nods again, puffing his pipe. “All of them noble pursuits, and eventually needed, but what of the more immediate concerns?”

“This leader you’ve chosen?” He looks to Taeron. “Was she chosen by your forces, or the people of Shadowdale? Oh yes, she made it quite clear to me that she was only a temporary measure. To get things started as they were, until a proper leader could be chosen. She even offered to pass leadership over to me, though I’ve no right to be claiming such. No, this whole temporary leader business might sound like a good idea, but I fear it really should be best to appoint an actual leader right away so efforts aren’t put to waste.

“Everyone is quite grateful for your assistance, the blood you’ve shed, the sacrifices you’ve made, make no mistake about that.” He stands, grasping his staff. “It will be remembered long into the annuals of time, songs will be sung, stories told, statues made, parents naming their children after heroes who fought here, and all that. However, this isn’t your home, is it? Rather than appointing yourselves into positions of power within this town, temporary though it may be, perhaps you should look to the people who will still be living here when all of you finally remember you’ve jobs, tasks, and lives elsewhere, hmm?”

“All this rebuilding and such is well and good, but it won’t do a lick of good if it isn’t the people who are doing it." He looks each of them in the face as he passes. "When you go home, who will be left then? How many of you are willing to give up your positions in other places to stay on here when all is said and done? No, first thing we need to do is find a leader who won’t have to chose between Shadowdale and some other place, or won’t have to be leaving too soon.“
With that, he starts walking outside, calling the attention of the people as he goes. Despite him merely heading for the town square, it wasn’t long before the entire town was gathered before him.

“You have won a hard battle, and have every right to feel proud of yourselves this day.” He says, his voice echoing clearly. “It was no easy task, but you accomplished it and pushed the Zhentarim out of your homes, but now comes the heavy task of rebuilding that which was lost. Now, comes the time to chose a leader who you will follow into happier times. Think well and think hard, for whomever you chose will be the new Lord of Shadowdale.”

Having said his peace, and to give the people time to think, he turns and wanders off toward his tower.

Are you just -that- stupid?

*the barbarian evidently just can't take it any more*

Please, turn around with a bright smirk and tell me all this was a joke I couldn't grasp because of my limited barbarian mind. Otherwise you'll force me to believe that you've lost your sanity. Or that the great Elminster is a lie.

*he gives Elminster a short moment to react, before continuing:*

These people lived under opression for -years-. Do you know how many times they rebelled?

And what the hell are you even talking about, saying that we're not allowing them to join into the process of rebuilding the town? Are you blind?
Half the forces I was tasked to command are farmers from Shadowdale. Trained by Karovir in the elven city. And they are right in the middle of all the work. The dwarves can work faster than most farmers, but Valtore didn't send a single farmer away from the construction site.

If you expect us to go from house to house and ask them what color would they like the outside walls to be, you must really be a lunatic.

I walk the roads of the city every single day and they know my name. They know they can approach me, because I approached them for DAYS when they were struck by the purple plague. I spent healing on them, even though I was afflicted myself. I did it despite many Zhentarim guards patrolled the roads. And I -never- asked for a single coin from them for any healing or protection I ever provided.

If there are any farmers who *care* about Shadowdale, they will open their mouths. If they decide not to, they probably simply don't care.

And have you even stopped to realize that despite us fighting to the death and losing many friends to win *THEM* *THEIR* freedom, not a single one cared to do as much as shake our hand?

You talk as if the Zhents were forever wiped from the face of Faerun. Well, guess what. They are not. They could strike at any moment. We need to rebuild and reorganize, and we need to do it fast. That is why I suggested Julia. And for your bloody information, she sacrificed herself for the people on several different occasions and she did it in public. Unless the people are dumb, stupid or completely without any memory of the past events, they will not reject her as a temporary leader. I took all that into consideration, before suggesting her name. She has a way with the land, she can give them a good harvest and she worked the fields with them, bloody hell.
She is no warmonger, she's a follower of Chauntea. The god that still has a temple around here, unless you forgot to notice.

We didn't take a single coin in taxes. Not a single grain. In fact, we have given our gold, our sweat, our blood into reforming this town, because it needs to be done soon. Otherwise all our effort could be wasted and the Zhents could return. If you want to place one of the herders or farmers in charge of the town's defenses, or a smith or a merchant in charge of our gold, or a merchant in charge of the dwarves... You're a mad man.
I will pick the man with the best abilities to be the commander after I leave and I will teach him everything I can. He might not get elected by the people in the end, because people tend to be swayed by stupid popularity contests, but I will know I did my job well and formed a man who could defend Shadowdale. I will be able to face Uthgar when my day comes and tell him that I completed every single task in my lift to the fullest of my potential.

After what you said and did here today... Will you be able to face Mystra?

*the barbarian shakes head, greatly disappointed in the man*

Screw you and your bloody high horse. When was the last time you talked to the people of Shadowdale? Ten years ago? Before they were bent and broken by the tyranny? Good for you. I am sure Mystra is proud.

When you decide to talk to me and to all these people with respect, I will listen to you. But not a moment sooner.

Valtore hears of the insulting words the Wizards spouted off in the tavern in front of everyone. "Well seems that be one story that is full of dung. We was offerin help ta tha good people ta rebuild, yet he just sees more enemies. Elder Grendel was right, human problems. We have been tryin ta get tha people ta work tagether and return this place ta what it was before tha Zhents came. And instead of advice from this 'great mage' he gives insults and accusations. Well as soon as I can get me Lads out of here tha better." He goes to find his cousins to tell them the good Jews that they will hopefully leave soon.

Arjay, watching the scene, rolled his eyes. "Yes, let's spout off indignancies at someone who dares point out that this is a village of its own that is well able to decide what they want. Well, I suppose the next day or so will show who actually wants to help the people of Shadowdale and who is simply trying to bolster their own self-importance."

Oh, they are able to tell what they want?
Worked out marvelously these last few years, didn't it?

Arjay cocked an eyebrow at Taeron, not doing a thing to quiet the conversation in the crowded street.

"Really? So the Zhentarim occupation was their fault now? I think you're rather out of your depth and should probably take the wise path and keep silent before you level too many more insults to all these people you profess to want to protect. I think they might have had quite enough of overbearing brutes who don't give a damn what they think."

listens to them back and forth

ok enough banter you both do have valid points and yes as day two is comming to an end we do need valid candidates selected by the farmers and towns folk..

and i know ye all have concerns and such as it happens some wish to live here other do not some farmers wish to return to mythdrannor some wish to stay this is all their choice i support them which ever way they decide..

the 3 days we took was to set things in motion partialy train folks to defend themselves and land for you a militia of sorts to patrol and keep the peace and laws once in effect which the new leaders once elected will decide it also served to let it sink in they are free now and give them time to think on such things needed..

will some of us leave sure will some stay yes will we leave you entirely alone in ruling aspects yes visitting and offering help when needed no..

i have one day left with the mages here and after the election of a new leader the villagers here may also apoint a leader of the mages them self or the leader elected may do so i will appoint a mage from here as temporary leader of mages here and i will also keep an open line of communication with them..

at the end of my third day i will no longer be incharge of anything here unless asked by the people themselves i may still walk around the town helping but only as it is what i feel should be done with spare time i have..

the militia that aided in freeing shadow dale was aa fine group indeed all faarmers rescued from zhents and escorted to mythdrannor and protected and given land to rebuild their lives with in lathander farms and to them i would offer a salute you men an women did a fantasic job..

remember make your choices for who you want to run for leadership of shadowdale and get them in so they can be added to a ballet for you to vote..

as for the glory and all that good stuff i can care less about it i just wanted the people free nothing more nothing less.. *seems to get side tracked in thought* ahh and a mage school here i still need to visit it and see whats going on there perhaps i may yet learn something still.. *shakes his head* so you see we may all be different and have different ideals but are united by the one we all share shdowdales freedom and they well being of its citizens..

if i cared at all bout glory and this and that my true name would be known by all but i dont and it isnt this serves to protect my family as well..

by all means continue to discuss amongst ye selves all that has been said any questions feel free to ask any of us i hide nothing more than my identity anything else i can tell you i shall do so freely..

i am here to help after all in what ways i can.. i thank ye all for listening and welcoming us.. you all have a good day and remember concider your options for leaders and choose wisely my friends once it is done it starts your reign of freedom truely ran by you the people with your elected leader..

with this i will shut my big mouth and have a drink and go back to work *laughes loudly* be well all

Vincent finally tired of hearing them bicker gathers the things Blue brought him and he stands, forcing his way out of the Inn. With an annoyed tone he grumbles on his way out.

No wonder it took us so long to get this town free'd of the Zhentarim, everyone can't get over their own ego... Don't know how I even got everyone gathered to get this attack organized and complete..

looks at the two argueing walks over

please arjay taeron calm yourselfs yes taeron they may not know what they want they have been told what to do think for a long time now this is why we took the three days let it sink in and them to make choices and so on they are not to blame tho..

and yes arjay they are not to blame they knew nothing on how to defend themselves they had heros that did that for them and now they are free and learning to do so them selves.. this is good thing happen here let us not ruin it for them with bickering back and forth..

taeron think more before lobbing insults arjay keep a cooler head and think more as well before getting angry please fellas we are here to help not devide.. we should be striving to set examples for the people here..

if you both stop an think you may relize this is the sorta thing they are used to seeing so much of from the zhents.. so please calm your selves and go do what you can for the people here.. *pats the two on the back* you both are doing a great job lets continue on doing that..

*Taeron eyes Arjay, evidently just fed up*

Cute. Very cute. You argument like a 9-year old. If you care for a real discussion where you actually listen before you mouth-fart, then you know where to find me.

*Then turns to Vincent, with a disappointed look:*

I expected more from you.

As for you, mage. I've said my piece.

*Taeron wanders off, to actually do some work*

Arjay gives a pointed look to the citizens around, as if to say 'well, wasn't that interesting' before he goes about his business.

blue mage would walk in seeking the old mage out and if found would discuss things with him as it stands with him about the mages and let it be know his time here is about over and has not recieved request to saty long as council or lead of the mages..

he again states as such has not been ask he plans to leave at the end of the night and asks the old mage if he plans to take over the assembled mages and lets it be known they are from here except for one he kinda just showed up they seemed to be a good group of folk two are knowledgabl in many things..

anf if he isnt going to lead them or is he will also let the newly elected leader know whats been done and leave the choice as leader to her..

blue would nod his head in repect before leaving to go seek out the new leader..
